One dead and one hospitalised in drowning incident in Costa Calma

A distressing incident happened on Wednesday afternoon on a beach in Costa Calma in the south of Fuerteventura, when one person tragically drowned, and another was hospitalised. All signs point to both people being caught in a challenging situation in the sea that ended one of their lives.

Both swimmers were rescued by lifeguards from the sea at around 3:45pm, and immediately alerted the emergency services and started administering CPR until they got there.

Medical personnel took over and performed advanced resuscitation manoeuvres on the first person but, unfortunately, were unable to save their life. Their details have not been made public at this time.

The second person, a 60-year-old man, was subsequently evacuated to the General Hospital of Fuerteventura for urgent treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.

The incident highlights the need to take caution when going into the sea when there are dangerous conditions, regardless of how good a swimmer you are.
