No barbeques or smoking in the mountains due to risk of forest fires

The Tenerife Cabildo has activated level 2 preventive measures against forest fires from today, Wednesday, due to the weather conditions on the island and the declaration of a ‘fire risk’ alert by the Canary Islands Government.

This means that smoking, fires and barbeques are now prohibited in recreational areas, camping areas, and campsites, as is burning agricultural or forest residues, and bonfires.

Likewise, work with machinery or tools that generate sparks is not allowed in forest or agricultural areas, such as angle grinders, brush cutters, welding equipment, or the use of any pyrotechnic materials.

The circulation of motor vehicles on the network of forest tracks for recreational purposes, as well as sporting events on tracks or forest trails and off-road, are also prohibited.

The Minister of the Natural Environment, Blanca Pérez, emphasized that we are facing a risky situation and preventive measures must be taken to guarantee people's safety.

She appealed to the population yesterday to follow the recommendations of the authorities, such as not accessing or staying in the forest areas of the island and taking extreme precautions throughout the island with any activity that could generate fires.
