After an intense haze over the last few days, the rain returned to the west of the Canary Islands yesterday afternoon and storms are forecast over the next 48 hours, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). Heavy rain is expected in Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro, as the haze gives way to wetter and windier conditions, with some electrical storms and even hail in some parts.
The rain, which was starting to intensify in El Hierro as of 9pm last night, comes after a mix of weather over the last week. First, there was a calima from the Sahara, that very soon coincided with the heaviest snowfall so far this winter, that covered the peaks of Tenerife and La Palma, followed by rain that gave way to another intense haze. However, it does seem that mo more snow will come as temperatures have risen.
Yesterday was a calmer day than expected, although powerful gusts of wind were recorded in areas such as Pájara (Fuerteventura) with gusts of up to 76kmh, and 71kmh in Izaña in Tenerife.
According to Aemet today will see: "convective clouds accompanied by sudden discharges of atmospheric electricity and heavy rains, winds and even, in some places, hail." This will give a slight respite to the haze, although it will continue to be present both tomorrow and Friday, while temperatures will continue to rise as they have done in recent days.”
A clear, hot sunny day is forecast in the eastern islands (Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura) today, although some rain is expected this evening and tomorrow will be much wetter.
