Police are hunting five suspects after a jewellery store was raided at Las Terrazas Shopping Centre in Telde, Gran Canaria, last night (Thursday), with around €50,000 worth of jewellery reported stolen.

According to the National Police, four masked men entered the store and smashed glass display cabinets before taking the jewellery and fleeing.

Investigators believe a fifth person was waiting as a getaway driver, while two vehicles were reportedly used during the escape. One of them had previously been reported stolen.

The robbery happened around 10:00pm at the José Luis jewellery store.

A shopping centre security guard was also reportedly assaulted during the incident.

The €50,000 figure is currently an initial estimate and could change once the business has completed a full inventory of the missing jewellery.

Third jewellery raid in the area

The latest incident comes after two other jewellery-store robberies at shopping centres in the same area of Gran Canaria in recent months.

Las Terrazas was previously targeted in a separate raid in which jewellery and other items worth more than €120,000 were stolen. Four people were subsequently arrested in connection with that investigation.

Another robbery took place at the nearby El Mirador Shopping Centre in Jinámar, where people wearing masks targeted jewellery displays.

However, police have not established any connection between Thursday night's robbery and the previous cases, and the latest raid is being investigated as a separate incident.

Officers are expected to use CCTV footage from the shopping centre and surrounding area as part of their efforts to identify those responsible and trace the vehicles used to leave the scene.

Las Terrazas is situated beside the GC-1 motorway in Telde and is one of the major shopping and leisure centres on the eastern side of Gran Canaria, regularly attracting both residents and tourists.

The National Police investigation remains ongoing.
