Five people, including two children, have been rescued after their boat suffered engine failure and was left drifting off the coast of Playa Blanca in Lanzarote.

The incident occurred at around 3.15pm on Saturday, 26th September, when the Zodiac experienced mechanical problems approximately 300 metres from the coast at Los Charcones.

With the boat unable to continue under its own power, the emergency services were alerted and a rescue operation was launched.

Emergency services sent to the scene

The Canary Islands Emergency Coordination Centre, CECOES, mobilised emergency resources after receiving the alert.

Maritime Rescue, Lanzarote firefighters and Local Police were involved in the response.

Emergency crews reached the occupants and secured the disabled boat before arrangements were made to bring it safely back to port.

Firefighters assisted with the safety of the towing operation as the Zodiac was taken towards Marina Rubicón in Playa Blanca.

All five reach port safely

All five people on board reached Marina Rubicón safely following the operation.

None of the three adults or two children required medical treatment.

The incident ended without any injuries being reported.

Los Charcones is situated along the rugged coastline west of Playa Blanca and is particularly known for its natural volcanic pools.

The successful rescue comes as the waters around Lanzarote remain popular with residents and holidaymakers for recreational boating and other maritime activities.
