Residents and visitors in the Canary Islands are in for a treat this week as the last supermoon of 2025 reaches its peak and brings the astronomical year to a spectacular close.

Known as the “Cold Moon”, this full moon will coincide with the Moon’s closest approach to Earth, the perigee, making it appear brighter and slightly larger than usual, according to NASA.

The supermoon will be visible across the Islands on Thursday night, with the best viewing time shortly after 3:00am on Friday 4th December.

Weather outlook for stargazers

AEMET forecasts high cloud cover in the province of Las Palmas and across the northern slopes of the mountainous islands. While this may soften the Moon’s glow at times, visibility is still expected to be favourable for most of the night.

Where to see it

For the best view, experts recommend heading to areas with minimal light pollution and an open horizon, such as:

  • Atlantic-facing beaches
  • Coastal viewpoints
  • Rural miradores
  • Clifftops and elevated terrain
  • High mountain areas
  • Flat coastal plains away from cities

Watching from a higher vantage point can make the giant lunar disc look even more striking as it rises above the sea or a dark skyline.

A final celestial spectacle of the year

Several supermoons occur each year due to the Moon’s elliptical orbit, but some are more noticeable than others, and astronomers say this one promises to be a memorable event for night-sky enthusiasts.

Whether you're a resident or visiting the Islands, it’s the perfect excuse to stay up late, look up, and enjoy one of nature’s most beautiful shows.
