New DANA approaching the Canary Islands bringing rain and thunderstorms

A DANA weather system is approaching the Canary Islands, bringing an increased risk of rain, locally heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms across the archipelago today (Friday) and into Saturday.

The isolated area of low pressure at high altitude is positioned to the east of the islands and is expected to destabilise conditions as it moves closer to the archipelago.

Although the effects will vary considerably between islands and even between different parts of the same island, forecasters expect showers across the islands, with the possibility of thunderstorms in some areas.

Lanzarote is currently expected to experience the most significant conditions, prompting the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) to activate a yellow weather warning.

LANZAROTE UNDER YELLOW WEATHER WARNING

The yellow warning covers Lanzarote and La Graciosa from 3:00pm today until 6:00am on Saturday.

AEMET says locally heavy showers could produce rainfall of up to 15 litres per square metre in one hour, with isolated thunderstorms also possible.

The Lanzarote Security and Emergency Consortium has issued precautionary advice ahead of the expected deterioration.

Residents and visitors are being urged not to park vehicles in flood-prone areas or close to ravines, where water levels can rise rapidly following intense rainfall.

Authorities have also recommended taking precautions around properties in vulnerable locations.

The nature of the DANA means rainfall is expected to be irregular and highly localised. Some areas could experience intense showers while locations only a short distance away receive relatively little rain.

Island-by-island forecast for Friday 9th October 2026:

TENERIFE
Tenerife will experience cloudy intervals, particularly across northern areas, where occasional light rain is possible.

Cloud is also expected to develop over inland areas during the day, bringing the possibility of scattered showers.

Southern and southwestern coastal resorts should see brighter intervals, although conditions could become increasingly unsettled later in the day and overnight.

GRAN CANARIA
Northern Gran Canaria will see more persistent cloud with occasional rain.

Conditions should initially be brighter across southern parts of the island, although cloud is expected to build inland during the afternoon with further showers possible.

Temperatures are expected to reach approximately 26°C in coastal areas.

LANZAROTE
Lanzarote faces the greatest risk from the approaching weather system today.

The island and La Graciosa are under a yellow warning from 3:00pm, with locally heavy showers capable of producing up to 15mm of rain in an hour.

Isolated thunderstorms are also possible during the afternoon, evening and overnight period.

Temperatures are expected to range between approximately 21°C and 26°C.

FUERTEVENTURA
Fuerteventura will see variable cloud mixed with sunny intervals during the day.

Showers are possible, particularly across inland and southern areas, with the influence of the DANA potentially becoming more noticeable later today and overnight.

Temperatures are expected to remain relatively stable.

UNSETTLED START TO THE BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND

The DANA is expected to continue influencing conditions across the Canary Islands into Saturday, although forecasters are not predicting continuous rain across the whole archipelago.

The exact location and intensity of showers will depend on the development and movement of the weather system, making conditions particularly variable.

Some of the strongest showers could remain over the sea, while other areas may experience short periods of locally intense rainfall.

Northeasterly winds will generally remain moderate, with occasional stronger gusts, while sea conditions could also become more unsettled in northern waters and the channels between islands.

Residents and holidaymakers planning journeys, hiking or other outdoor activities should check the latest forecast and any official weather warnings before setting out.

The unsettled conditions arrive at the beginning of the Bank Holiday weekend, with Monday 12th October marking Spain's National Day.
