The tragic death of a young British holidaymaker in Playa de las Américas has sent shockwaves through his hometown of Liverpool. Harrison Hanley, a 20-year-old swimming instructor, died on 25th April following a fall at an apartment complex in the south of Tenerife.
What was meant to be a relaxing break in the sun ended in heartbreak when a maintenance worker discovered his body at the property where he was staying. After weeks of uncertainty, an inquest held at Gerard Majella Courthouse has now confirmed the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
Accidental fall confirmed
According to evidence presented before the coroner, Harrison died after falling from a “balcony” inside the apartment block. The official verdict ruled out any third-party involvement or suspicious circumstances.
The Spanish death certificate states that the cause of death was severe traumatic shock, with Harrison dying instantly due to the extent of his injuries.
“There is no evidence that this was anything other than a tragic accident,” the coroner concluded during the hearing in the UK, bringing clarity, though little comfort, to his devastated family and friends.
Tributes pour in
News of Harrison’s death has prompted an outpouring of tributes describing him as “full of energy, vitality and exceptional charisma”.
He was especially well known in his community as a dedicated swimming instructor. Parents of children he taught have shared emotional messages online, praising his patience and kindness.
Harrison attended St Hilda’s Church of England High School, where former teachers described him as someone who “loved life and loved people”.
Friends affectionately called him “everyone’s favourite cheeky lad”, saying he had a natural gift for bringing people together.
Fundraiser raises over £43,000
In the wake of the tragedy, a fundraising campaign launched on GoFundMe by his friend Jack has raised more than £43,000 to help support his family with repatriation costs and funeral arrangements.
On 6th May, members of his community gathered for a balloon release in his memory, a symbolic farewell to a young man whose life was cut tragically short.
The incident has deeply affected residents and visitors in the south of Tenerife, once again highlighting how quickly a holiday can turn to tragedy.
