The Canary Islands have received a remarkable 10.9 million international tourists in the first nine months of 2024, marking a 10% rise over the same period in 2023, according to the latest data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
This surge places the Canary Islands as the third most popular region in Spain for international tourists, capturing 14.9% of the country's total international arrivals.
Nationally, the domestic Spanish tourism sector reached record-breaking numbers, with over 73.9 million foreign visitors arriving by September, an increase of 10.9% compared to the 66.64 million visitors recorded during the same period last year.
This growth trend is also reflected in total tourism spending, which hit €99.1 billion from January to September, a 16.9% increase over 2023, setting a new record.
British tourists continue to be the largest group, making up 19.9% of total international visitors. They are followed by travellers from France, Germany, and Italy. Regionally, Catalonia led with 21.4% of international arrivals, followed by the Balearic Islands at 18%, and the Canary Islands with a notable 14.9%.
As Spain’s tourism sector continues to thrive, these numbers underscore the Canary Islands' growing appeal as a top destination, contributing significantly to Spain's overall tourism success in 2024.
