A British man has died at Lanzarote Airport after landing on a Jet2 flight from the UK yesterday afternoon (Thursday). The incident occurred in Terminal 1, shortly after passengers began to leave the aircraft.

The man suffered a sudden cardiac arrest in the corridor leading to passport control, one of the most crowded areas of Terminal 1. Despite the rapid response of airport medical teams, he was pronounced dead at 3:45 pm.

The Guardia Civil confirmed the death was due to natural causes, though witnesses described a chaotic scene as passengers funnelled into the packed pre-passport area. Sources indicated the man collapsed while waiting to move forward in the queue.

Airport operator Aena defended its handling of the situation, stating that disembarkation began at 2:26 pm and the medical alert was raised at 2:48 pm, rejecting claims that the victim had been waiting for more than an hour to reach the border checkpoint.

Thursdays are notoriously the island’s busiest arrival day, with multiple UK flights landing within short timeframes. Since Brexit, British travellers must pass through full passport checks, creating repeated bottlenecks and long delays. The issue has become a persistent source of tension for both tourists and airport staff.

Almost exactly a year ago, the airport suffered a major breakdown when 17 non-EU flights landed within 80 minutes, forcing thousands of passengers into overflow spaces not designed for queues.
