A six-year-old boy has been rescued after becoming trapped in a flooded ravine with his father as a result of heavy rainfall in Fuerteventura caused by Storm Emilia. The incident is one of more than 300 weather-related emergencies recorded across the Canary Islands as the storm continues to affect the archipelago.
The rescue took place today, Saturday, in Puerto del Rosario, specifically in the area of the Barranco de Puerto Lajas. According to the Local Police, the father and son were travelling in a vehicle that became stuck in the ravine after sudden flooding caused by intense rain.
Police confirmed that the driver ignored a safety cordon that had been placed at the entrance to the ravine due to dangerous conditions. As a result, the vehicle was quickly surrounded by rising water, leaving both of them trapped inside.
Emergency services were alerted and responded rapidly, managing to safely rescue both the man and his six-year-old son. The child was treated at the scene by medical personnel after showing clear signs of hypothermia, although his condition was stabilised. No serious injuries were reported.

Authorities have stressed that the situation could have had far more serious consequences if it were not for the swift intervention of the emergency services.
Storm Emilia has already caused widespread disruption across the Canary Islands, with more than 300 incidents reported, including flooding, fallen trees, road closures and rescues. In addition, worsening sea conditions have led to the first precautionary evacuations of homes in coastal areas due to the risk posed by high waves.
