Work is progressing in Playa Blanca, as the Ayuntamiento de Yaiza moves forward with the first phase of a major overhaul of Avenida Papagayo to provide 100 new parking spaces in the heart of the resort.

The project currently focuses on the area between the Iglesia del Carmen and the Papagayo shopping centre. This initial stage will deliver 35 parking spaces on public land behind the church, while a further 65 angled bays will be added along Avenida Papagayo itself.

As part of the redesign, this stretch of road will become one-way, heading towards Las Coloradas between the church and Calle Maciot.

The new car park behind the church will include two designated disabled bays for people with reduced mobility, as well as dedicated areas for motorbikes and loading and unloading, for deliveries.

Looking ahead, Mayor Óscar Noda has confirmed plans for a further 300 free public parking spaces on land opposite the Hotel Princesa Yaiza. This forms part of the second phase of the project, which will extend the refurbishment along the avenue and include resurfacing of the expanded parking area.

The mayor highlighted that the full urban regeneration scheme stretches along the entire Avenida Papagayo to the Ciudad Jardín roundabout, with a total investment of €2.6 million funded in part by the local council.

Councillor for Public Works, Ángel Lago, described the initiative as an ambitious upgrade. Beyond resurfacing and road markings, the plans include new pavements, removal of architectural barriers, improved accessibility, and upgraded street lighting, all designed to enhance safety for both drivers and pedestrians along Playa Blanca’s main thoroughfare.

In addition, the council is set to begin another key project shortly: a full improvement of the main entrance to Playa Blanca via Femés. This work will cover the stretch between the Plabacón roundabout and the Marcastell residential area, with a budget of €1.3 million, also funded from municipal resources.

The council has apologised for any inconvenience caused during the works, as efforts continue to modernise infrastructure in one of Lanzarote’s busiest tourist areas.
