A veterinarian is under investigation in Gran Canaria after two dogs were euthanised without a clear medical reason, raising concerns over animal welfare and professional conduct.
The case is being handled by the Guardia Civil’s nature protection unit, which confirmed that the animals were put down based solely on the vet’s own assessment that they showed aggressive behaviour. However, no official veterinary report has been found to support or justify that decision.
A second person is also under investigation. She is the owner’s sister-in-law and is understood to have taken the two Cocker Spaniels to the veterinary clinic on the day the animals were euthanised.
Under professional veterinary guidelines, carrying out procedures without the owner’s consent, without clinical evidence, or without proper documentation may be considered serious misconduct. Other potential breaches include poor professional practice and a lack of medical justification.
Such actions can lead to suspension from practising, as well as possible administrative or criminal consequences depending on the outcome of the investigation.
Authorities have confirmed that enquiries are ongoing to establish exactly what happened and whether those involved may face further action.
