The Carrera por la Vida Foundation – Walk for Life, together with Adeje Town Hall, have launched the third ‘Camino de Santiago por la Vida’ walk. The initiative, which began this weekend and runs until 7th September, aims to highlight the fight against breast cancer and raise awareness of the importance of regular check-ups.
This year, 40 people, the majority of them women who have overcome cancer, are walking more than 125 kilometres from Tui (Pontevedra) to Santiago de Compostela along the well-known Portuguese Way. Accompanied by a technical team, family and friends, they will experience a journey designed to be transformative, in a supportive environment adapted to their needs.
The motto of the Camino de Santiago por la Vida, ‘The journey is the goal’, is intended to celebrate life after cancer. “The real success is not just reaching Santiago, but having faced the illness and coming together to share experiences and mutual support. It is not a competition, but a space for fellowship, solidarity and resilience,” the organisers said.
Throughout the six stages, participants will be accompanied by Brigitte Gypen, president of the Carrera por la Vida – Walk for Life Foundation, and her team of volunteer guides, as well as Esther Rivero Vargas, Adeje councillor for health, with her technical team. The organisation will ensure the walk is accessible, safe and adapted to the group’s needs.
The walk from Tui to Santiago de Compostela
The section between Tui and Santiago de Compostela forms part of the Portuguese Way, one of the oldest and most travelled Jacobean routes on the Camino de Santiago. The itinerary from Tui, crossing the River Miño and passing through Galician towns, ends at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
This route offers both religious and cultural experiences of great historical value, with rivers, amazing landscapes, forests and heritage sites, and has been officially recognised as a pilgrimage route for its spiritual significance and cultural interest. In this edition, the 106-kilometre walk is being undertaken with a focus on fellowship, mutual support and visibility for the fight against cancer.
