Passengers travelling through Gran Canaria Airport are reporting delays after ground staff began strike action, disrupting flights at several major Spanish airports.

The industrial action involves Groundforce, a ground handling company that supports several international airlines including some from the UK.

The strikes, organised by trade unions, are taking place during the busy Easter period due to an ongoing dispute over pay and working conditions at 12 airports across Spain, including Gran Canaria, Tenerife (North and South), Lanzarote and Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands.

According to union representatives, delays have already been reported in Gran Canaria, with some luggage failing to make it onto flights. The worst disruption so far has been seen in Madrid, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Málaga and Gran Canaria.

Although minimum service levels of 60% are in place, unions warn that disruption could worsen as the day goes on, with delays building up and impacting later flights.

What Travellers Should Expect

Passengers flying to or from the Canary Islands in the coming days should be prepared for:

  • Flight delays, especially during busy travel periods
  • Possible issues with checked luggage
  • Longer waiting times at airports

The strike is ongoing with no fixed end date, meaning disruption could continue throughout the Easter holiday period.

Travellers are advised to check with their airline before heading to the airport and allow extra time for their journey.
