The local authorities in Gran Canaria have stepped up surveillance at the Maspalomas Dunes this Easter, deploying additional officers and a drone to protect one of the island’s most fragile natural spaces.
The operation, led by the Cabildo, involves around 20 personnel, including environmental officers working afternoon shifts, alongside support from the Guardia Civil (SEPRONA unit), Policía Canaria, Local Police and Civil Protection teams.
Protecting a Unique Natural Space
The reinforced presence will cover the 404-hectare Dunas de Maspalomas, a protected area known for its ecological importance and popularity with visitors, particularly during busy holiday periods like Easter.
Officials say the main aim is to guide visitors away from restricted zones and ensure they stick to designated paths, helping to minimise damage to sensitive plant life and wildlife.
Raúl García Brink, the island’s councillor for Environment, Climate, Energy and Knowledge, highlighted ongoing conservation efforts, including initiatives such as the Madunas and Impulsa Maspalomas projects. These programmes focus on protecting and restoring the dunes through environmental action and improved visitor management.

Technology and Awareness Campaigns
As part of the Impulsa Maspalomas project, new monitoring systems are being introduced, including sensors, surveillance cameras and public address systems in key viewing areas. These measures are designed to strengthen control of the site and reduce environmental pressure.
Authorities have also launched awareness campaigns with a clear message: visitors should leave no trace, with “your gaze the only footprint” in this delicate landscape.
Strict Rules in Place
Access to restricted areas is strictly prohibited and may result in fines. Visitors are urged to follow signage and comply with instructions from on-site officers.
The Cabildo has called for both individual and collective responsibility to protect this iconic natural environment, stressing that its future depends heavily on the behaviour of those who visit it.
