More than 200 weather-related incidents were recorded across the Canary Islands during the early hours of Saturday as Storm Emilia continued to batter the archipelago, according to the Canary Islands Government’s Coordinating Centre for Security and Emergencies (CECOES).

The incidents occurred between midnight and 8.00am and were mainly linked to strong winds and dangerous conditions caused by the storm. The highest number of call-outs was reported in the province of Las Palmas (Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura), followed by the metropolitan area of Tenerife and the city of Las Palmas in Gran Canaria.

Emergency services dealt primarily with fallen trees, streetlights and Christmas decorations that were blown onto public roads, creating hazards for both pedestrians and traffic. Despite the high number of incidents, authorities have confirmed that no serious injuries were reported during this period.

In response to the severe conditions, the Canary Islands Government, through its General Directorate of Emergencies, activated a maximum alert for coastal phenomena across all islands from Friday night.

This decision was taken due to forecasts predicting waves that could exceed nine metres in height, posing a significant risk along coastlines and seafront areas.

The coastal alert is accompanied by a wind alert, with gusts reaching up to 130 kilometres per hour in mid-altitude and summit areas. These conditions increase the risk of coastal flooding, particularly in exposed zones. In addition, a snow alert remains in force for the peaks of Tenerife, where wintry conditions are expected to continue.

Authorities have also activated a pre-alert for storms across the entire archipelago, as well as specific pre-alerts for snowfall on the highest areas of La Palma and Gran Canaria.

Residents and visitors are being urged to take the situation seriously, avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from coastal areas during rough sea conditions, and secure loose objects such as terrace furniture or decorations.
