The Canary Islands Government approved new rules on Monday to improve the quality and safety of outdoor and adventure activities across the islands. The updated law applies to all types of active tourism, such as hiking, scuba diving, cycling, surfing, kayaking, and other adventure sports, which are enjoyed by thousands of visitors every year.
The decision was made after talks with local businesses and follows a positive report from the Canary Islands Advisory Council. The active tourism sector in the islands includes around 1,200 companies and supports more than 4,000 jobs.
Jessica de León, the Regional Minister for Tourism and Employment, explained that the new rules have two main goals: “to make the sector more professional and create new job opportunities, while also stopping unqualified operators from working illegally.”
She added that active tourism is vital for the islands because it “creates local jobs, promotes the natural beauty of the Canary Islands without harming the environment, and has a positive impact on local communities.”
The new regulation sets clearer requirements for companies and guides, recognising official qualifications and certificates that prove they are trained to run each type of activity safely. The aim is to raise standards and protect tourists, without creating unnecessary red tape or making it harder for professionals to work legally in the Canary Islands.
