Judge sends driver of the GC-1 car chase to prison

The Investigating Court number one of Telde in Gran Canaria, has ordered the 31-year-old man, who was involved in the car chase on the GC-1 motorway, into preventive detention without bail for two reasons: the incidents on the GC-1, and for criminal reiteration in relation to previous events that ended with the running over and death of an eight-year-old boy.

Regarding the chase on the motorway in which two police officers were injured, the judge sent him to prison for the following crimes: driving without a licence, reckless driving, driving under the influence of toxic substances, an attack on authority, and car theft, as reported by the TSJC.

The driver was first reported by an off-duty policeman, who informed the Guardia Civil that a Toyota Yaris had overtaken him at high speed with abnormal driving behaviour on the GC-1. After checking the number plates they found the car had been reported stolen from the Jinámar neighbourhood of Las Palmas.

Traffic police tried to stop the man who sped past a police checkpoint, so they gave chase, until he crashed into two police cars by the junction of the Las Terrazas Commercial Centre, injuring two officers.

He was also detained for a separate incident in September 2021, when he was sent to prison on a provisional basis by the same Court after, allegedly, he fatally ran over a child in Jinámar and fled. He was provisionally released from jail on January 13th, after his appeal against the provisional prison order was granted.

Due to these facts, he is being investigated for the crimes of reckless homicide, fleeing the scene of a crime, driving without a license, car theft, and false documentation.

The tragic incident occurred when this man allegedly ran over the 8-year-old boy, called Dilan Santos, on Calle Manuel Alemán Álamo, and drove off. He was arrested the next day, after numerous witnesses from the Jinámar estate, identified him.
