The Canary Islands Government has approved plans to build 59 new protected (affordable) homes in Arona, in the south of Tenerife, as part of efforts to tackle the ongoing housing shortage across the islands.

The project, led by the Department of Public Works, Housing and Mobility, will see an investment of €16 million and will also include parking spaces for residents.

The homes will be built on the “Marazul” plot, located in Las Rosas near Las Galletas in the south of the island. This development forms part of a broader regional strategy aimed at increasing the supply of affordable social housing in the Canary Islands, where demand continues to outweigh availability.

It is the first phase of a larger plan that includes a total of 159 properties across Tenerife, with further projects planned in Adeje and Guía de Isora.

Backed by European Funding

The initiative is being supported by the European Union’s Next Generation funds, aimed at boosting infrastructure and social development projects.

The approved technical plans cover all necessary installations, including plumbing, electrical systems and thermal infrastructure, allowing the project to move forward to the construction phase.

Regional authorities say the approval will help speed up the process of delivering much-needed public housing in the south of Tenerife, one of the areas most affected by rising property prices and limited supply.

Beyond Tenerife, similar housing developments are also planned in other parts of the Canary Islands, including Arrecife and Santa Lucía de Tirajana.
