The National Police have arrested three men in Lanzarote, aged 44, 47, and 49, for their alleged involvement in a drug trafficking network. The operation led to the seizure of 55 kilograms of cocaine, one of the largest recent drug busts on the island.
According to an official press release, suspicions were first raised after investigators noticed the men making frequent short trips between Gran Canaria and Lanzarote.
Officers from the Narcotics Unit in Arrecife began surveillance and quickly observed the suspects taking extensive counter-surveillance measures in an apparent attempt to detect police presence.
The breakthrough came when the men were seen entering a holiday rental property in Playa Honda, carrying heavy travel bags. Officers intercepted them in a car shortly afterwards and discovered 18 packages of cocaine weighing around 20 kilos inside two backpacks.
A subsequent search of the Playa Honda property uncovered a further 32 packages, adding another 35 kilos to the total haul.
The third suspect was arrested at Lanzarote Airport as he attempted to leave the island.
All three detainees have appeared before the duty court in Arrecife, where a judge ordered their immediate imprisonment pending further investigation.
