A 27-year-old Italian man has died after being swept into the sea by a powerful wave in the Los Charcones area of Playa Blanca yesterday afternoon (Monday). He had been fishing near the coast along with another man when a sudden surge of waves dragged them into the water. One of the men managed to get out on his own, suffering cuts, scrapes and signs of hypothermia, and was taken to Hospital Doctor José Molina Orosa for treatment.

The second man was in far more critical condition. A GES rescue helicopter found him in the water and airlifted him to the paramedics. When emergency staff reached him, he was in cardiac arrest, and paramedics carried out resuscitation procedures, managing to revive him and stabilise his condition before transporting him to the hospital in a medicalised ambulance. Despite the quick response and continued care, he later died from his injuries.

The accident happened when the Canary Islands were under a coastal pre-alert, with strong swells and waves approaching four metres, particularly around high tide, which had occurred just minutes before the incident. Authorities had already urged people to stay away from exposed coastlines, especially rocky areas and natural pools such as Los Charcones, which are known for dangerous, unexpected wave surges.

This tragedy follows several other serious coastal incidents across the islands in recent days, including the deaths of four people in Tenerife on Sunday after being swept away by powerful waves. They are still searching for the fifth victim involved in this tragedy.
