Two young children were rescued after being swept out to sea on an inflatable boat at El Reducto beach in Arrecife, Lanzarote. Lifeguards spotted the situation and acted quickly, preventing what could have become a serious incident.

The rescue took place at around 4:45pm on Saturday when the lifeguards noticed the small plastic boat drifting further away from the shore. The children, aged eight and nine, had been playing on the inflatable when strong winds and currents carried them out to sea.

Lifeguards reached the pair at a distance of around 200 metres from the coast and brought them safely back to the beach. They were later reunited with their mother, unharmed.

According to the local council, the children’s mother told staff she had briefly returned to her car, leaving them unattended for a short time. During that moment, the children entered the water with the inflatable, and the wind quickly pushed them further out.

The incident highlights how quickly conditions can change along the coast, even on apparently calm days. Beaches across the Canary Islands can be affected by sudden gusts and strong currents, particularly in open areas.
