The importance of Three Kings Day in Spain
Three Kings Day, known in Spain as Día de Reyes, is one of the country’s most cherished traditions. Celebrated on 6th January, it commemorates the arrival of the Three Wise Men to Bethlehem, bearing gifts for the newborn Jesus.
Children leave out their shoes the night before and often receive presents from Melchior, Gaspar and Balthasar, making the eve of 5th January one of the most magical nights of the year.
For Spanish families, it is the main gift-giving celebration of the festive season, and is seen as more being more important than Christmas Day. The cabalgatas, or parades, recreate the Kings’ journey and are an essential part of the cultural and religious heritage of the country.
