The Yaiza City Council has officially reopened the La Degollada Picnic Area after an extensive renovation. The revamped site now features a host of modern amenities, creating an inviting environment for family outings, social gatherings, and outdoor recreation.
The 12,000 square metre area, now fully fenced and made accessible to all, includes five designated barbecue areas, shaded areas, a new children’s playground, and public toilets and washing facilities. Situated conveniently along the route between Yaiza and La Degollada, the site offers both convenience and tranquillity for visitors.
Mayor Óscar Noda highlighted the importance of caring for the renewed space, urging the public to enjoy the facilities responsibly.
"This is a significant investment in our community’s well-being and quality of life," he said. "We trust residents will treat it with the respect it deserves."
The €420,000 renovation project was co-financed through the Municipal Cooperation Plan of the Lanzarote Cabildo. Councillor for Parks and Gardens, Rubén Arca, outlined the comprehensive improvements, which include concrete paving in barbecue areas, pedestrian walkways, accessibility upgrades, modernised grills, a new playground, and the construction of two toilet facilities.
The refurbishment builds on earlier improvements by the Council, such as upgraded access routes, the installation of solar-powered streetlights, pergolas for shade, and a tree planting campaign. The area is now maintained daily by on-site staff and is equipped with security cameras to ensure safety and upkeep.
To encourage public use and gather feedback, the council will offer free access for the first three months. During this period, operational guidelines will be finalised, including potential usage fees and deposit requirements. The council is also evaluating the option of managing the space through a concession arrangement in the future.
With these developments, the La Degollada Picnic Area is poised to become a key recreational area for Yaiza residents, fostering community spirit and offering a modern, green space for all to enjoy.
