The Guardia Civil have arrested a man accused of a violent assault that took place in Puerto del Carmen, in Lanzarote, last Saturday night (26th January), leaving a 30-year-old Italian man with severe head injuries.
The victim, identified as Salvatore, was placed in an induced coma to be transferred to Doctor Negrín Hospital in Gran Canaria, as he suffered a cerebral haematoma as a result of multiple punches, which could leave him with permanent brain damage.
The suspect, a resident of Lanzarote with an existing criminal record, was arrested on this Saturday night (1st February), shortly before midnight. He is now waiting to appear before the duty court in Arrecife.
Investigators have determined that the attack occurred outside a bar after Salvatore, who had been playing table football with friends, stepped outside for a cigarette. It was there that he was assaulted and left unconscious.
Salvatore, known on the island for managing a café in Playa Honda, underwent surgery in Las Palmas to reduce the swelling in his brain. Meanwhile, the investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
