Strong smell leads to discovery of 1,300 cannabis plant nursery in Lanzarote

The Guardia Civil has arrested two people in Lanzarote, aged 31 and 41, on charges related to public health offences after uncovering a cannabis plantation in their home in Tahíche.

The discovery was triggered by the strong smell of marijuana emanating from the property.

Authorities were alerted on 3rd December following a tip-off from local residents about a potential illegal drug cultivation site in the area. Agents from Costa Teguise, in collaboration with SEPRONA officers, verified the credibility of the information during a routine inspection.

After nearly three months of surveillance, investigators confirmed the presence of a cannabis plantation at the optimal stage for harvesting. This led to a request for a search warrant from the local court, which was executed on 14th February.

During the operation, officers seized 1,296 marijuana plants at various stages of growth, weighing a total of 36.2 kilograms. Additionally, they confiscated 393.3 grams of hashish, 69.2 kilograms of dried cannabis buds ready for consumption, and 23.5 kilograms of shredded marijuana.

Equipment used for drug production, including heat lamps, drip irrigation systems, and air extractors, was also found on-site, along with bladed weapons, an air rifle, and €250 in cash.

Following their arrest, the two suspects were brought before the Court of Instruction No. 2 in Arrecife, where they were released pending trial.
