The first effects of Storm Emilia are already being felt across the Canary Islands, with three flights diverted this morning (Friday) due to adverse weather conditions at Tenerife North and La Palma airports.

According to airport operator AENA, strong winds and unstable conditions linked to the storm disrupted normal operations shortly after the start of the day.

Diversions in Tenerife

At Tenerife North Airport, two inter-island flights were affected. Aircraft arriving from Lanzarote and El Hierro were unable to land safely and were diverted to Tenerife South Airport, where weather conditions were more favourable.

Tenerife North is particularly vulnerable to wind and low cloud, and diversions to the southern airport are common during periods of severe weather.

International flight diverted from La Palma

In La Palma, an international flight arriving from Amsterdam was also diverted. The aircraft was also redirected to Tenerife South Airport after conditions at La Palma Airport made landing unsafe.

Passengers were later informed by their airlines about onward arrangements.

Storm Emilia is forecast to bring strong winds, rough seas and unstable weather to several islands over the coming days. Further delays, cancellations or diversions cannot be ruled out, particularly at more exposed airports.

Advice for travellers

British tourists and residents travelling to or from the Canary Islands are advised to:

  • Check flight status regularly with airlines or airport websites
  • Allow extra time when travelling to airports
  • Follow instructions from airline staff and airport authorities

As weather conditions evolve, further disruption is possible, and passengers are urged to stay informed through official channels.
