Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has arrived in Lanzarote to begin his summer holidays, just days after the opposition Partido Popular presented a motion to declare him 'persona non grata'. Despite the political backdrop, Sánchez touched down on the island around 1:00pm on Saturday aboard an official government aircraft, accompanied by his family.
As in previous summers, Sánchez is staying at the state-owned official residence of La Mareta, managed by Spain’s National Heritage agency. His stay is expected to last until 23rd August, though sources suggest it may be extended until the 25th to coincide with the feast day of San Ginés, the patron saint of Arrecife.
The Prime Minister plans to mix rest and recreation with private leisure activities during his time on the island. These include boat trips and cycling excursions, often accompanied by local PSOE deputy Marcos Hernández, and potential hikes in lesser-known volcanic areas such as the Volcán del Cuervo near Tinguatón.
Security around La Mareta has been significantly reinforced, with around 30 Guardia Civil officers from Madrid deployed to the island to work alongside the Prime Minister’s regular security detail. Additional patrol boats will monitor the coastal perimeter of the residence to ensure his privacy and safety throughout the stay.
While his schedule is largely private, Sánchez may hold informal meetings during his holiday. Among those potentially joining him on the island are former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, who is already in Lanzarote, and acting ministers Salvador Illa and Fernando Grande-Marlaska. A casual meeting with the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, is also on the cards.
La Mareta, located in Costa Teguise, has become Sánchez’s preferred summer retreat in recent years and remains one of the most secure and discreet official residences in the Spanish government’s portfolio.
