Six people are under investigation in Fuerteventura after allegedly filing false reports of crimes, including robberies, thefts and stolen vehicles, in a bid to claim insurance payouts.
The cases were uncovered by the Guardia Civil in Las Palmas after officers analysed witness statements, CCTV footage and mobile phone data, revealing clear contradictions between the claims made and what actually happened.
In one case, a man reported being violently robbed in the early hours, claiming two attackers stole several belongings, including a high-end mobile phone. However, investigators later found he had simply lost the device in a local nightlife venue and allegedly filed a false report to claim on his insurance.
Another incident involved a man who reported his car stolen overnight. CCTV footage showed the vehicle had, in fact, been involved in a crash in Morro Jable, damaging street furniture, before the driver and passengers abandoned it at the roadside.
Officers also examined a case involving a tourist who claimed large sums of money had been stolen twice from his hotel room. Investigators found no signs of forced entry, no duplicate key had been issued, and safe access logs did not match the times of the alleged thefts.
Authorities say the high number of tourists staying in areas such as Pájara can increase opportunities for genuine crimes, but warn that some visitors take out insurance policies before travelling and may attempt to exploit them through false claims.
The Guardia Civil has reminded the public that making a false report is a criminal offence under Spanish law. Those found guilty can face fines, prison sentences and additional civil liability.
