A British woman has publicly criticised Ryanair for charging her over £100 to change a flight ticket after her mother died just weeks before their planned holiday to Lanzarote. Sophie Taylor had booked the trip in October 2024 to celebrate her mother Sharon’s 60th birthday, with flights from Bristol to Lanzarote and back a week later.

Sadly, Sharon passed away in August this year, two months before the planned trip. Taylor decided to travel with her father instead and contacted the travel companies to request a name change on the tickets. Love Holidays and Jet2Holidays waived their admin fees out of compassion. Ryanair, however, told her she would need to pay £100 to change the name on the ticket.

Even after sending the death certificate as proof, Taylor received only an automated response asking for payment. She said: “My whole world fell apart when I lost my mum. Being faced with this on top of everything else was just horrible.”

The family explained that Lanzarote, and especially Puerto del Carmen, held special memories for them, as they had visited 15 or 16 times over the years. The return to the island was therefore emotionally difficult for both father and daughter.

In the end, her father decided not to cancel Sharon’s seat on the return flight and instead booked a separate one for himself for £52.
