In a notable operation in Arrecife, Lanzarote, the Local Police successfully apprehended a known drug dealer, thanks to the help of a police drone. The suspect, known to them due to prior encounters, was caught ´in the act´ and swiftly brought before the court.
This operation was sparked by numerous complaints from residents about drug activities near a children's park and is part of a wider effort by the Local Police to monitor sensitive areas within the city.
Arrecife's Mayor, Yonathan de León, has ramped up efforts to identify illegal substance sellers and protect young people from their influence in public spaces.
The Drone and Robotic Operational Navigation Unit (UDRON) of the Local Police played a pivotal role in this arrest. On the morning of 19th March, the drone captured live footage of a drug and money exchange between two people in a high-risk area. As the buyer left, officers tracked and intercepted him, finding illicit substances in his possession.
Meanwhile, another patrol detained the seller, who was under continuous drone surveillance. A search of the suspect revealed he had a significant amount of cash, confirming his involvement in drug dealing.
Subsequently, he was arrested and taken into custody and is now awaiting trial.
