A passenger has died during an EasyJet flight from France to Lanzarote after suffering a medical emergency shortly before landing. The incident occurred on Tuesday on a routine service from Nantes to Lanzarote.
The Airbus A319 aircraft was approaching César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport when the emergency unfolded.
The captain issued a distress alert after the situation became critical. The crew carried out established emergency protocols, and the aircraft landed safely in Lanzarote “in accordance with standard procedures.”
EasyJet later confirmed the passenger’s death, although the cause has not been disclosed.
In a statement, the airline said:
“Our crews are trained to respond to medical issues and did everything possible during the flight. Our thoughts are with the passenger’s family and friends, and we extend our full support and assistance to them during this difficult time. The well-being and safety of our passengers and crew is always EasyJet’s top priority.”
The return flight to Nantes was delayed for several hours while the necessary formalities were completed in Lanzarote.
What happens during in-flight medical emergencies?
Commercial airlines are required to carry first aid kits, oxygen supplies, and defibrillators, while crew members are trained in emergency medical response. If a passenger becomes critically ill, pilots can request urgent medical assistance from professionals travelling on board and will alert the nearest airport to prepare for immediate intervention on landing.
In severe cases, flights may be diverted to the closest suitable airport, though in this instance, the EasyJet aircraft was able to continue safely to Lanzarote.
