Weather alerts have been issued across parts of the Canary Islands, with strong winds expected to affect several islands from Sunday afternoon into Monday, according to AEMET.

The warnings mainly apply to higher ground and exposed coastal areas, where conditions are set to be more severe.

La Palma is expected to be the worst affected, with gusts of up to 80 km/h forecast from 3:00pm on Sunday, particularly in high areas and around El Paso. Elsewhere on the island, including eastern and western areas, winds could reach up to 70 km/h.

Alerts Across Tenerife and Gran Canaria

In Tenerife, warnings will begin at 3:00pm tomorrow, Sunday, affecting the east, south and west of the island. Gusts could reach 70 km/h, especially in southeastern areas.

For Gran Canaria, the alert starts slightly later at 6:00pm, focusing on higher ground and exposed areas in the northwest and southeast, where similar gusts of up to 70 km/h are expected.

Other Islands Also Affected

La Gomera and El Hierro will also come under warnings from Sunday evening, with strong northeast winds affecting higher areas and exposed slopes.

Coastal Conditions to Deteriorate

There are also yellow warnings for coastal conditions, with northeast winds of 50 to 61 km/h (force 7) expected at sea.

These conditions will mainly affect channels between the western islands and the waters south of the channel between Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

Coastal alerts will be in place from 6:00pm on Sunday and continue throughout Monday in:

  • East, south and west coasts of Tenerife and Gran Canaria
  • La Gomera
  • El Hierro
  • Western parts of La Palma

Winds to Continue Into Monday

Forecasters say windy conditions will persist into Monday, especially across the western islands.

While winds in the high areas of Gran Canaria may ease slightly around midday, strong gusts are expected to continue elsewhere until later in the evening.
