A major search operation is underway in the north of Lanzarote after a 41-year-old man was reported missing while hiking in a remote area, with a rescue helicopter now sent to assist in the search.

Emergency services were alerted just after 11:00am this morning (Thursday) following concerns for the man’s whereabouts in the Camino de Las Rositas area, near the village of Ye. The Guardia Civil is coordinating the operation after receiving the initial report.

The missing man, identified as Miguel Ángel Gentile, is understood to have planned hiking routes in the area. His car has since been found parked nearby, along with his mobile phone and personal documents.

Investigators are working on the possibility that the vehicle may have been left there several days ago, although this has not yet been confirmed. The alarm was raised after a family member reported losing contact with him.

Search efforts began yesterday, but were stopped in the evening due to poor visibility caused by fog. Teams resumed operations today as conditions improved.

The operation now includes a rescue helicopter, firefighters from Lanzarote and La Graciosa, volunteer rescue teams, and local police from Haría. Coastal areas such as El Risco and El Papelillo are also being searched.

Officials have warned that the terrain in the area is steep and difficult, requiring experienced personnel to carry out the search safely.

Authorities have not yet released further details as the operation continues.
