Hollywood legend John Travolta has been turning heads in Gran Canaria this week, as he was spotted filming scenes for his latest movie Black Tides directed by Renny Harlin.
Travolta plays an estranged father, Bill Pierce, who is trying to reconnect with his daughter and grandson off the southern coast of Spain when their boat is attacked by rogue orcas, leading to a fight for survival.
Travolta has been seen shooting on the north coast of the island, with Sardina del Norte in Gáldar confirmed as one of the filming locations. Travolta’s presence has already caused excitement on the island, with fans eager to spot the Golden Globe winner off set.
The choice of Gran Canaria reflects the island’s growing profile as a destination for international film productions. Its varied landscapes, from volcanic mountains to coastal waters, combined with tax incentives, have attracted both European and American crews in recent years. While locals are becoming accustomed to film set activity, Travolta’s visit is one of the most high-profile this year.
This is the latest in a string of international projects to choose the Canary Islands as a backdrop, thanks to their spectacular landscapes and year-round sunshine.
Whether you’re a resident or visiting on holiday, keep your eyes peeled — you might find yourself sharing a beach with a Hollywood icon.
