A Jet2 flight travelling from Tenerife South to Edinburgh was forced to land at Santiago de Compostela Airport in mainland Spain on Saturday after a passenger suffered a medical emergency mid-flight.
According to Spanish air traffic controllers, the aircraft crew requested an emergency diversion so the passenger could receive urgent medical assistance as quickly as possible.
Priority landing granted
After being notified by the pilots, air traffic control immediately prioritised the aircraft’s arrival, allowing the crew to carry out a continuous descent and direct approach.
Controllers authorised the aircraft to land directly on runway 35 at Santiago de Compostela Airport, reducing the time needed to reach the ground.
Throughout the descent, air traffic services remained in constant coordination with the airport, ensuring that medical teams were ready on the ground when the aircraft landed.
Emergency protocol activated
Once the aircraft touched down, the airport’s emergency protocol was activated, allowing health services to assist the passenger immediately after landing.
At present, no further details have been released regarding the passenger’s condition, although authorities highlighted the swift coordination between the flight crew, air traffic control and emergency services that enabled the diversion and rapid medical response.
