Haría Council launches campaign to encourage responsible pet ownership

The Town Council of Haría, in the north of Lanzarote, has launched a new campaign to promote cleanliness and responsible pet ownership in public spaces, called ‘Lead by Example. Pick Up Your Dog’s Waste’.

The initiative is spearheaded by the Department of Animal Welfare and features striking signs placed throughout the municipality to raise awareness.

The campaign's primary aim is to encourage dog owners to clean up after their pets during walks and to prevent animals from urinating on public furniture and fixtures. This effort forms part of a broader strategy to maintain the town’s image as a clean and welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.

Mayor Alfredo Villalba underlined the importance of the initiative, stating, “We are committed to creating a clean and environmentally friendly community here in Haría.” His remarks were echoed by Marcos Lemes, the councillor responsible for Animal Welfare, who highlighted the need for greater civic responsibility among pet owners.

As well as promoting the use of waste bags, the campaign also reminds dog owners to carry appropriate items such as muzzles when necessary. The council hopes this initiative will foster a collective sense of care and responsibility, contributing to a more pleasant and hygienic public space for all.
