The Canary Islands Government has officially approved the long-awaited project to add a third lane to the TF-1 motorway between Oroteanda (Las Chafiras) and Las Americas in the south of Tenerife.

According to the Department of Public Works, Housing and Mobility, the project represents an investment of €175.4 million and has an estimated completion time of 42 months.

The upgrade aims to increase the road’s capacity, improve traffic flow, and enhance safety along one of the busiest stretches of motorway in the Canary Islands.

The Oroteanda–Las Americas section is part of the wider plan to expand the TF-1 from San Isidro to Las Americas, the main highway that connects many of the island’s key urban and tourist areas. With traffic volumes rising steadily in the south, this development is seen as essential to maintaining mobility and supporting economic growth.

The works will begin just after junction 64 in Las Chafiras (San Miguel) and will extend beyond junction 73 for Playa Las Americas in Arona, and partly Adeje. The project includes a third lane in each direction and the remodelling of several major junctions, including those at Parque de la Reina, Guaza, Los Cristianos, and Las Americas.

Additionally, the road from the Los Cristianos junction up to the South Hospital (TF-28), will be widened to two separated carriageways with two lanes each, allowing direct connections between the hospital and the TF-1.

Prepared by FHECOR Ingenieros Consultores S.A. and Trazas Ingeniería S.L., the project has successfully passed all required technical and environmental evaluations.

Officials emphasise that the new infrastructure will reduce travel times, strengthen connectivity between local communities and tourist zones, and enhance the island’s logistics capacity. It also forms part of a broader government strategy to meet the growing demand for mobility in southern Tenerife, boost competitiveness, and improve quality of life for both residents and visitors.

The remaining section of the TF-1 expansion, between Las Chafiras and Granadilla, is still awaiting final approval.
