An 80-year-old woman died this afternoon (Thursday) after being rescued from the sea in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote. The incident occurred shortly after 2:00 pm at Playa Dorada, one of the resort’s main beaches.
Emergency services received a call from a witness reporting that several bathers had pulled the woman from the water and that she was not breathing.
Medics carried out resuscitation attempts at the beach, but despite their efforts, the woman was later pronounced dead by the doctor. The Guardia Civil has taken charge of the corresponding legal proceedings.
This latest incident adds to a concerning number of drownings and near-drownings recorded across the archipelago this year. Dozens of people have already lost their lives in coastal and pool incidents in 2025, with many more hospitalised after being pulled from the water.
Authorities warn that while overall fatalities are slightly lower than in previous years, the number of non-fatal emergencies remains high. They continue to stress the importance of following beach safety flags, lifeguard instructions, and taking extra care when swimming in unfamiliar waters.
