A tragic incident occurred during the celebrations of Los Dolores in Mancha Blanca, Lanzarote, yesterday evening (Monday), when an 84-year-old man from Arrecife died after choking while eating at one of the food stalls.
The emergency unfolded just after 6:30 pm, when the man began to choke and collapsed. Bystanders immediately tried to help before medical staff from the on-site emergency team rushed to assist.
Despite prolonged attempts to resuscitate him, their efforts were sadly unsuccessful.
Ambulances from Boluntis and SIA arrived, along with officers from the Guardia Civil, who remained on site to secure the area until the coroner and police investigators arrived.
Following the incident, the Mayor of Tinajo, Jesús Machín, took to the stage to inform festival-goers of the man’s passing. With the family’s agreement, most of the scheduled events continued, although the evening’s fireworks display was cancelled as a sign of respect. A minute’s silence was then observed by the thousands of people gathered in the square.
