Direct flights from Tenerife to New York will continue next summer

United Airlines have announced the extension of their agreement to fly three times a week from New York to Tenerife, to include next summer between June 8th and September 26th 2023. The six and a half hour flight, which cost from 380 euros, was a great success this summer with 13,400 seats available operating at 90% occupancy.

The Cabildo says the success was down to the joint effort between the public and the private sector to offer "quality that has led the destination to meet requirements that others don’t have."

The president of the Cabildo, Pedro Martín, said that "the renewal is great news and demonstrates the resounding success of the initial experience last year,” and highlights that businessmen in the hotel sector, especially the five-star hotel sector, "have told me how important it is for them to have agreement renewed for the direct link with the Big Apple."

Martín added that "United Airlines have confirmed their satisfaction by renewing the agreement that had an optional second year. We are continuing to work hard to extend the agreement beyond the three summer months, but it has not been possible yet, mainly due to two factors. Firstly, the lack of pilots in all airlines, including United, due to the Covid-19 pandemic that led to the early retirement of many professionals, and delays by Airbus when delivering parts and planes to the airline.”

Marketing in the USA:
Martín confirmed that Tenerife is: “advertising in the North American market, because there is an important tourist niche here. That is the reason for the campaign working, hand in hand with Turespaña, which has opened an island embassy in Las Vegas headed by the CEO of Turismo de Tenerife, David Pérez. We also take part in the World Routes event that brings together the most important airline companies and operators in the world.”

"Now we have to maintain this line of work to convince them that there is enough supply and demand on the Island to expand the connection. At the moment an exciting path is opening up”, he concludes.
