An invasive blue crab, a species that comes from the coasts of North and South America, has been found in Los Molinos on the island of Fuerteventura, raising concerns among environmental experts. Although this species has been sighted in the Canary Islands before, these cases remain rare.
The crab was discovered by Alejandro Cabrera, a resident of Puerto del Rosario and an aquaculture technician. It is now being monitored by the Red de Detección Temprana de Especies Exóticas (Early Detection Network for Exotic Species), the official body responsible for locating, identifying, analysing, controlling and, where necessary, eradicating invasive species in the Canary Islands.
This blue crab, also known as Callinectes sapidus, is considered dangerous to native marine life. Adult specimens feed on fish, molluscs, crabs, prawns, cephalopods and even plants, making them a serious threat to local ecosystems. Experts warn that this highly adaptable species can survive and spread quickly in new environments.
In recent years, the Canary Islands have recorded several sightings of potentially dangerous or invasive wildlife species. Among them are lionfish, pufferfish, and certain jellyfish species, which can pose risks to both marine ecosystems and swimmers. In some coastal areas, sightings of lionfish, known for their venomous spines, have led to increased monitoring by environmental agencies. Pufferfish are another invasive species and can be toxic if consumed, while jellyfish blooms occasionally lead to temporary beach closures.
Authorities have also stepped up efforts to detect and control invasive reptiles and insects, as these species can disrupt local biodiversity and threaten the islands’ fragile ecological balance.
