A tragic incident occurred aboard the MS Arvia, a cruise ship operated by P&O Cruises, after a crew member died following an onboard accident while the vessel was sailing towards Tenerife.
According to reports from The Sun newspaper, the Arvia departed from Southampton on Friday (24th October) for a 14-night cruise bound for Barbados, with a scheduled stop in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
The fatal workplace accident took place on Sunday (26th October), causing the ship to change its route and divert to the port of A Coruña, where it docked at the cruise terminal around 4:00pm to allow for the body of the deceased crew member to be removed from the ship.
Sources at the port confirmed that the unscheduled stop also gave passengers the opportunity to disembark briefly while formalities were carried out.
In an official statement, P&O Cruises said: “We can confirm the death of a crew member following an accident on board Arvia yesterday. Our thoughts and prayers are with their family and friends, both at home and on board, and we are providing full support to those affected.”
Authorities are now working closely with the cruise company to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. The identity of the deceased has not been released.
Following the diversion, the Arvia is expected to continue its planned route across the Atlantic towards the Caribbean, with arrival in Barbados scheduled for 7th November.
