The Canary Islands Government has activated a pre-alert for flooding across the entire archipelago as Storm Therese approaches the archipelago, with officials warning it could be one of the most significant weather events in recent years.

The pre-alert, issued by the General Directorate of Emergencies, will come into force from 3:00pm on Wednesday (18th March), amid growing concern over a dangerous combination of heavy rain, strong winds and rough seas.

Flood risk across all islands

The measure covers both coastal and inland flooding risks and forms part of the Special Emergency Plan for Flood Risk (PEINCA), which is being activated in response to the approaching storm.

This latest step adds to existing alerts already in place for strong winds in the western islands and Gran Canaria, as well as coastal warnings across the region.

Authorities have described the incoming system as potentially one of the “most impactful” storms to affect the Canary Islands in recent years.

Dangerous sea conditions at high tide

Officials are urging particular caution along the coast, where large waves could crash onto promenades, coastal roads and bathing areas.

The risk is expected to be highest around high tide, especially in the two to three hours before and after peak times. Key high tide periods include:

  • Wednesday: 12:50pm – 1:15pm
  • Thursday: 1:00am – 1:25am and 1:25pm – 1:50pm
  • Friday: 1:35am – 2:00am and 2:00pm – 2:25pm
  • Saturday: 2:15am – 2:40am and 2:35pm – 3:00pm

Heavy rain and rising barrancos

The storm is expected to bring sustained rainfall, with periods of heavy or very heavy showers, particularly in mountainous islands and in northern, western and south-western areas.

There is a heightened risk of flash flooding in urban areas, as well as sudden surges in ravines (barrancos) and water channels.

While the worst conditions are likely in the higher islands, heavy downpours are also possible in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

Authorities urge caution

Emergency services are closely monitoring the situation and are urging residents and visitors to take precautions, avoid unnecessary travel during severe conditions, and stay away from coastal and flood-prone areas.

With Storm Therese set to intensify, the coming days could bring significant disruption across the Canary Islands.
