The Canary Islands have once again recorded the highest temperature in Spain, with the small coastal village of Tasarte, in the municipality of La Aldea de San Nicolás on Gran Canaria, reaching a scorching 42.6°C yesterday afternoon (Tuesday).
According to data recorded by AEMET weather stations, the temperature was recorded at 3:40pm, making Tasarte the hottest location in the country for the third consecutive day.
The reading comfortably exceeded the 41.6°C recorded in Molina de Segura (Murcia) and the 41.0°C measured at Lomo Pedro Alfonso, also in Gran Canaria, placing the island firmly at the top of Spain's temperature rankings once again.
Gran Canaria Continues to Swelter
Much of southern, eastern and western Gran Canaria was under an orange weather warning on Tuesday as the ongoing heatwave continued to push daytime temperatures close to, or above, the 40°C mark.
Elsewhere on the island:
- Maspalomas reached 39.8°C
- Agüimes recorded 38.9°C
'Infernal Nights' Continue
The intense daytime heat has been accompanied by exceptionally warm nights across the archipelago. In many areas, overnight temperatures remained above 30°C, conditions that AEMET has described as "infernal nights", making it difficult for many residents and visitors to sleep.
Some Relief on the Way
Forecasters say the heatwave will begin to ease slightly today (Wednesday), although temperatures will remain dangerously high in several areas.
An orange heat warning will stay in force for southern, eastern and western Gran Canaria, where temperatures could still reach or exceed 37°C.
Meanwhile, yellow warnings remain in place for:
- Southern, eastern and western Tenerife
- The summits of Gran Canaria
- Western areas and high ground of La Palma
- La Gomera
- El Hierro
Temperatures in these areas are expected to reach 34–35°C, meaning the risk from the prolonged hot weather remains significant.
Authorities continue to advise people to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, and take extra care of young children, older people and anyone with underlying health conditions as the heatwave continues across the islands.
