A body has been discovered floating in the waters off Guatiza, Lanzarote, near the area where a local resident went missing on Monday while out collecting shellfish.
The Emergency Consortium of Lanzarote confirmed the discovery to the EFE news agency, stating that the body was found this morning (Friday) by a search party made up of local residents, including the missing man's brother.
The Guardia Civil are guarding the body at the scene until the Judicial Authority gives permission for it to be taken for official identification, to decipher whether it is the missing fisherman or not, and an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Widespread Search Effort
Since the man's disappearance earlier this week, police, emergency services, Maritime Rescue, and Civil Protección from La Oliva have conducted an extensive search operation.
Yesterday (Thursday), the search radius was expanded to include the waters around Fuerteventura, in hopes of locating the missing man.
Authorities are expected to release further details once forensic teams complete the official identification process.
