Adverse weather conditions around Lanzarote Airport caused significant disruption yesterday, Sunday, forcing the diversion of seven incoming flights, according to AENA.
Six aircraft were redirected to Fuerteventura Airport and one to Gran Canaria Airport. Among those affected were flights operated by easyJet (from Newcastle), Jet2.com (from Birmingham), TUI Airways (from London) and Canaryfly (from Gran Canaria).
Although Aena has not specified the exact meteorological triggers, Lanzarote Airport is known to experience operational difficulties during episodes of strong crosswinds, low cloud and reduced visibility, particularly in the autumn and winter months.
In this instance, pilots were reportedly unable to establish visual contact with the runway, leading to aborted landings and diversions.
Operations at the airport were restricted throughout the afternoon as weather conditions remained unstable.
