Police in Gran Canaria have launched an ongoing investigation following the discovery of a backpack at a remote viewpoint, in a case that may be connected to a person who disappeared on the island more than a year ago.

According to reports from Television Canaria, the item was found at the Degollada de las Yeguas viewpoint, a rugged and isolated location not far from Maspalomas.

The discovery was made on Friday by a local shepherd who was in the area and spotted the object near the viewpoint. He immediately alerted the authorities, prompting a swift response from emergency services.

Specialist forensic officers attended the scene and secured the area to carry out a detailed examination. Investigators collected evidence from the surrounding area as part of efforts to establish the circumstances of the find and determine whether it is connected to the disappearance.

At this stage, police have confirmed that the owner of the backpack has not yet been formally identified. Items recovered from inside, along with any material evidence found nearby, are currently undergoing laboratory analysis to determine whether they belong to the individual who went missing over twelve months ago.

The challenging terrain around the Degollada de las Yeguas viewpoint has also been carefully searched to rule out the presence of any additional clues. The investigation remains under strict confidentiality while officers await the results of forensic tests.
