A Ryanair flight from Manchester to Lanzarote required police intervention on Tuesday night after a passenger became violent during the journey. According to Spanish air traffic controllers, the woman not only caused disruption on board but also used physical violence against others. The events took place shortly before 11 pm on flight RYR536Q.
To ensure a swift landing, air traffic control shortened the aircraft’s approach to César Manrique–Lanzarote Airport while coordinating with the Guardia Civil, who were waiting on the tarmac when the plane touched down.
The Guardia Civil removed the passenger after landing. This latest case comes just weeks after a separate incident involving a disruptive British passenger. In August, a court in Edinburgh sentenced him to 225 hours of community service after his behaviour forced a Ryanair flight bound for Lanzarote in July 2024 to turn back to Scotland.
There have been several other recent cases of unruly passengers on flights to the Canary Islands. In Tenerife, a British holidaymaker was detained earlier this summer after refusing to follow crew instructions and causing a disturbance during landing at Tenerife South.
Meanwhile, in Gran Canaria, another Ryanair flight reported a passenger who became aggressive after drinking his own alcohol on board, forcing Guardia Civil officers to meet the aircraft on arrival.
Airlines and airport authorities have called for stronger penalties for disruptive behaviour.
